PS4 PlayRoom unlocks the potential for a whole new set of fun and features with the DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation 4 Eye.
The PlayRoom will come pre-installed on every PS4 at launch making Sony’s tech demo available to everyone who has a PS4 along with a PS4 Eye.
The PlayRoom is basically a set of demonstrations that is designed to show what the DualShock 4 is capable of doing when working in sync with the PS4 Eye.
The concept and demonstrations pre-installed on the PS4 are similar in fashion to how the PlayStation 3 Eye came with software that let users test out its capabilities.
How the PS4 PlayRoom works
It’s great that Sony is pre-loading the PS4 PlayRoom on every console in order to help owners familiarize themselves with what the DualShock 4 controller is capable of. Again, the PS4 PlayRoom tech demos are not full-fledged games but are more along the lines of mini demos that allow PlayStation 4 owners to see what their new technology is capable of. These demos are meant to be informative and fun.
With the PS4 Eye turned on, you can bring up the PS4 PlayRoom menu with an upward flicking motion on the DualShock 4 touchpad. There are a variety of modes that are meant to show off the features of the DualShock 4’s touchpad, motion sensors, improved Dual Motors, and speakers. The controller interface for The PlayRoom is simple and easy to understand so that both parents and children can make use of the PS4 PlayRoom and learn more about the PlayStation 4’s improved technology.
The PlayRoom and DualShock 4 features
At the moment, there are only a few demos that are included with The PlayRoom with the promise of more to come via DLC. The PlayStation 4 PlayRoom utilizes some of the following features found in the new DualShock 4 controller:
- Light Bar: The Light Bar on the DualShock 4 controller is used as a way for the PlayStation 4 Eye’s camera to be able to track it. This provides the ability to create interactive effects on-screen such as a holographic interface that users can interact with.
- Motion Sensor and improved dual motors: The new and improved motion sensor and dual motors in the DualShock 4 controller provide users the opportunity to partake in a few interesting tech demos including one mini game of holographic Air Hockey. There’s also a tech demo that involves a robot helper named Asobi who has provided users with AR Bots housed in the DualShock 4 wireless controller.
- Touch Pad: The DualShock 4’s newly implemented touch pad can be used in The PlayRoom to interact with a variety of augmented reality menus. The touch pad is also used in the PS4 PlayRoom demo to flick out objects like AR Bots from the DualShock 4 wireless controller. The touch pad opens up completely new possibilities for console gamers and The PlayRoom’s tech demos provide a unique way to show users how.
