The PlayStation 4 is the fourth edition of the PlayStation console. It comes almost 20 years after the release of the original PlayStation console in December 1994. Many changes have been made to the way gameplay is perceived, one of which is the ability to share live gameplay and stream it to devices. Sony has also made changes to the chipset, moving away from the Cell architecture used in the PlayStation 3.
The Sony PS4 at launch will have a sleek black plastic cover, similar to the PS3 slim models that were released. The initial PS4s will be wide and have more of an angular design, making it look almost more futuristic. As with other models, it will have the ability to stand up or lay flat, making it easy to fit in most spaces. Though Sony has stuck to the black coloring for the release, special edition PS4s will follow for the holidays and beyond.

PS4 specs and features
The PlayStation 4 has an AMD processor inside, which Sony helped develop. It has a Jaguar central processing unit (CPU) and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. The RAM alone is 16 times that of the PlayStation 3, allowing for faster gameplay and more apps being run at one time.
The developers at Sony hopes that these advanced features allow for longevity, even with advances in computer graphics and programming. Considering the fact that the seventh generation systems never reached peak performance with the graphics processing unit (GPU) and CPU, it is safe to say that the PS4 will not be topped in performance from a console system anytime soon.
A secondary chipset will handle downloads/uploads and the social gameplay applications. The included audio module allows for many audio streams and chat for in-game use. All of these tasks will continue in the background whether in gameplay or while the console is in sleep mode. Sony designed the PS4 so that these functions could operate on their own without affecting the quality of gameplay or running apps.
|CPU||AMD Jaguar x86-64 (8 core)|
|GPU||AMD Radeon Graphics Core Next, 1.84 TFLOPS|
|HDD||500 GB at launch, future editions and upgrades|
|Optical Drive||BD 6xCAV, DVD 8xCAV (read only)|
|I/O||USB 3.0, AUX|
|Connections||WI-FI 802.11 b/g/n, Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.1|
|Outputs||HDMI, optical S/PDIF audio|
Blu-ray discs can be played in the optical drive, at three times faster than that of the PS3. The system will buffer discs on the fly as part of Sony’s PlayGo strategy. Photos and videos can be read with resolutions of up to 4K in the PS4; however, game resolution is not expected to move beyond 1080p. Storage will start with a 500 GB hard drive that will be able to be upgraded.
As with the PS3, the PS4 will offer Wi-Fi and Ethernet connectivity. It will also have Bluetooth and two USB 3.0 ports for attaching peripheral devices. A connection for the PlayStation Camera is included, in the form of an auxiliary port. Two audio/video outputs are included, one HDMI TV port and an optical S/PDIF audio.
The PS4 user interface
The user interface has also been redesigned. Sony opted to ditch the old XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface in favor of a new, easier to use one. The new PS4 user interface looks somewhat similar to that of the Xbox 360, but operates at a speed that you would expect from a next-gen console. Since many Xbox 360 gamers have found the old PlayStation 3 user interface to be confusing, this may sway many loyal Xbox fans to try the new PS4 console. It may even win them over as the new PlayStation 4 user interface is surprisingly responsive and fast.
PS Vita and PS4 remote play
One of the most popular features for the PlayStation 4 is the opportunity for you to be able to play PS4 games remotely. If you have a PlayStation Vita then you have the ability to play almost all PlayStation 4 games on your Vita. As long as you have a reliable and strong Wi-Fi connection, you can access remote play from your PS Vita.
If you have a PS4 Eye then you’ll have the opportunity to experience the PS4 PlayRoom. The PlayRoom is a way for you to experience the potential features of your DualShock 4 and PS4 Eye through a variety of demos. The PlayRoom comes pre-installed on every PS4.
PlayStation App and second screen capabilities
The PlayStation App will allow users the ability to interact with their PS4 system while not directly accessing their console. You’ll be able to connect to your PS4 account, the PlayStation Network and more. In the future, it is expected that players will be able to stream games to their tablets and phones as well.
With second screen functionality you’ll be able to add even more gameplay opportunities to your PS4 experience. Games like Battlefield 4 are already taking advantage of the next generation by implementing Commander Mode in the game. This gives you the ability to take command of a set of specific features meant only for your tablet experience such as launching missile strikes and issuing strategic orders to other players.
Tip: Did you know that it is very important you update your PS4 to receive its full benefits? Get the update to get the most out of your PS4 system.

In order to get the most from your PS4 it is highly advised that you apply the day-one update and any future updates. You can still use your PlayStation 4 without the update. You can update your PS4 either through the internet or a USB storage device if you don’t have your console hooked up to the internet.

PlayStation 4 features coming soon
Not all of the anticipated features will roll out with the PS4 release. Sony continually updates their PlayStation systems as new features become available and as the need arises. Updates occur when new games are purchased, as well as when the PlayStation Network is used. All updates are required in order for the console to operate efficiently — and to play games.
One of the anticipated features is the Suspend Mode. This mode is similar to sleep, but it runs at a lot lower power level. While in this mode, players can opt to download games or download updates to their system. This mode also pauses gameplay and allows the players to resume when ready to play again.
PS4 backwards compatibility
Out of the box the PlayStation 4 is not backwards compatible. It was not designed to be backwards compatible due to the previous architecture of the PlayStation 3. This means that PS3 games whether disc-based or digitally downloaded will not work with the PS4. To remedy this situation Sony has bought and invested in Gaikai technology. With Gaikai cloud streaming capabilities, users will be able to access PS3 games over the internet similar to Netflix. Sony even hopes to have the entire PlayStation video game library available for streaming at some point in the future.
PS4 rumored features
Rumors are that Sony is in development of a 4K movie streaming service for the PS4. This means that movies would be able to be rented or streamed in ultra hi-def. This is an exciting rumor due to how limited 4K videos are at the moment. There is no ETA on this service as of now.
Gaming Televisions for the PlayStation 4
With the purchase of a new console usually comes the purchase of a new television. Why? Well, new consoles come with better resolution and frames per second. This means you’ll see better visuals and get better gameplay. But what good is all this if you aren’t taking advantage of it?
The PlayStation 4 requires the use of an HDMI port. It outputs games usually at 1080p. So if you want to use your PS4, you’ll need to have a television that can output at 1080p resolution. There are a lot of great TVs that are a lot cheaper than you think. We have a list of some of the best gaming television for the PlayStation 4. We’ve put together this massive Gaming TV Guide so you have an excellent resource at your disposal.
Sony’s PlayStation 4 will offer many accessories both included with the system and not. All of these accessories add to the experience of the overall PS4 console and gameplay. Accessories such as the controllers are required, but the camera, headsets, and Move system are not. Each of these extra accessories will lend added functionality to the games and apps included with the system.
DualShock 4 controller
The new DualShock 4 controller has been redesigned, and greatly differs when placed side by side with the Dual Shock 3 controller.
- One of the most noticeable additions is the Touch Pad in the middle of the controller. The Touch Pad not only provides the possibility for new gameplay experiences, but it is also a clickable button.
- Some other changes that users will notice with the new controller is that there is no Start or Select button on it. Instead, there is a Share button and an Options button on opposite sides of the Touch Pad. With the push of the Share button, you can quickly record gameplay, take screenshots, and share your PS4 gameplay footage with friends, family, and followers via Facebook.
- The light bar changes color depending on what player you are to avoid confusion during multiplayer games.
- The analog sticks are more precise with a tighter feel than with the previous model.
- The DualShock 4 also brings a three-axis gyroscopic motion sensor with three-axis accelerometer to the table. This allows for better feeling and vibrations during gameplay.
- The DualShock 4 also comes equipped with a built in speaker that produces off-screen gameplay sound effects.
The PlayStation Camera
The PlayStation Camera was redeveloped for use with the PS4.
We’ve put together a lot of reasons to buy a PlayStation Camera for your PS4. And to Sony’s surprise, the PS4 Camera has been a big hit with gamers.
It has two cameras located side by side in the front of the device. Both cameras are high-sensitivity and have wide-angle lenses.
The camera can tell where the player is in relation to the other players during gameplay and rearrange the screens in multiplayer mode in most games. It is also said that the camera can differentiate between the player and the background and foreground. Use of facial recognition, voice, and body movement will enhance gameplay greatly and the PlayStation Camera will implement with Project Morpheus, Sony’s Virtual Reality Headset.
Now that the PlayStation 4 has cross-game chat, every console includes a mono headset. There is a large amount of multiplayer focused games launching or coming to the PS4 system and in-game chat will be a must.
The mono-headset that comes with the console is neither comfortable nor a long-term solution. What it is though is convenient. If you’re looking for an upgrade then you’ll need to check out Sony’s Gold Wireless Stereo Headset for the PS4.
There are a lot of very popular PS4 headsets to choose from. We’ve put together a list of the best headsets for PS4 so you don’t have to waste time searching around. And currently, Bluetooth headsets don’t work with the new PS4 console unfortunately. But that doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a great wireless PS4 headset from our list.
Tip: Did you know that you can use your PS4 headset connection to perform voice commands on the home screen and during gameplay?
Even with all the advancements in gameplay, the PlayStation Move will still play a vital role when it comes to PS4 gameplay. Many move games are expected to eventually release for the PS4 in the coming months and years. The camera required for the PlayStation Move when used with the PS3 will not be supported. Instead, players must use the new PS4 Eye.
Charging Station for the DualShock 4
The POWER A DualShock 4 Controller Charging Station for PlayStation 4 is just one of many best-selling Charging Stations for PS4. You can charge two controllers at once and use the station to cradle your controllers without charging them.
- The charger is officially licensed.
- Matches the PS4 and DS4 designs.
- Uses an AC cord that plugs in the wall.
- Small and compact.
- Push release holds the controllers in place.

Are there a lot of games to play on the PS4?
The best thing about gaming on the PS4 is you’ll have plenty of options. From indie games to big blockbuster games like Destiny and Diablo 3. There’s a huge variety of PS4 games to choose from.
A PlayStation Plus subscription is now required for most online gaming on the PS4. It is very similar to the Xbox Live Gold service from Microsoft, but it offers better perks with membership. It works with the PS4, PS3, and the PlayStation Vita systems. Those with the PS3 and Vita systems receive free instant games each month, a feature that will roll out with the PS4 as well. Discounts are given to members in the PlayStation Store, and even without the membership, players are still able to use all of the free and paid apps.
PlayStation Plus is a great way to introduce members to free games that they might not have purchased in the past. For instance, on the PS3 PlayStation Plus members received Battlefield 3 for free!
Tip: Did you know that PS Plus members get free PS4 launch games like Resogun and Contrast? Use the PS Plus 2 week free trial voucher included with the PS4 system. Resogun is worth it!

A few do require external memberships, such as Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon Instant Video.
