What constitutes a good horror game? A lot of times it is a complex mixture of atmosphere and thrills that produces some of the best scary games.
The music- or absence of it has to be just right to give rise to terror as well. This feeling of dread is often increased by eerie sounds, monsters jumping out at unexpected moments and intense situations.
Each of these great PS3 games within this list offers some of those elements. Some just right, and others just enough to make them some of the best horror games for PS3. In the spirit of the release of Outlast on PS4, we’d thought we would comprise a list of the top 20 PS3 horror games to date.

20. Silent Hill Downpour
After your prison transport bus crashes in Silent Hill, you are left to fend for yourself in the seemingly deserted town.
With Silent Hill: Downpour you’ll experience perplexing puzzles and terrifying encounters with nothing but the objects around you to defend yourself with. Stay and fight or flee as the terrors around you try to take control.
Time travel is not for the faint at heart. In Singularity you’ll experience the sudden time waves that throw you from the present day to 1950 and back again.
Fight your way through foes from the past, present and somewhere in between all while trying to solve the conspiracy on island Katorga-12. Make use of the Time Manipulation Device to avoid being killed or worse.
18. Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut
In a story seemingly out of Twin Peaks, FBI agent Francis York Morgan investigates a young woman’s murder in Greenvale.
With Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut expect to find yourself in a fight for survival against the killer. Be wary though, dark forces have also taken residence in this seemingly normal town.
17. Metro: Last Light
Venturing outside the tunnels of the Metro is a death wish. Underneath the ruins of Moscow, small bands of humanity struggle and fight to survive the mutated creatures above.
In Metro: Last Light, supplies are limited and munitions are equal to gold in the uncertain times of 2034. Artyom holds the key to survival, but is burdened by the guilt of years past. Choose to face the terrors of the poisoned world above or die in the struggle between men. Not such a simple choice after all.
16. Dead Island Riptide
In Dead Island Riptide, the last survivors of a corrupted island paradise once again find themselves in trouble when their ship is hit by a fierce storm. Panic and disaster quickly spreads aboard the ship as the remaining survivors fight for survival yet again.
15. Dead Space 3
Isaac Clarke is back in Dead Space 3. And he’s on a journey across space to find the source of the Necromorphs and end the outbreak.
After crash landing on Tau Voltanis, Isaac finds himself in a game of survival as he comes his closest yet to the plague that has ravaged his body and soul. Terror awaits at almost every corner with creatures chasing Clarke down as he finally discovers the horrible truth for himself.
14. Fatal Frame
The PSN game Fatal Frame is a PlayStation 2 classic.
Discover an eerie and isolated manor on the outskirts of a nameless village. The manor looks abandoned, but looks can be deceiving. Be forced to confront your worst nightmares in this oppressive and frightening atmosphere.

From the ashes of what grows in Fortune City comes the survival horror game Dead Rising 2.
In a show of bravado, challengers take part in Terror is Reality, a TV show that pits everyday people against a horde of zombies. Those who survive get the prize, money and 15-minutes of fame. But is it really worth it in the end?
12. Condemned 2: Bloodshot
Ethan Thomas is a broken man. Formerly a Serial Crimes Unit investigator, he now drifts through life ever on the decline.
However, in Condemned 2: Bloodshot, he finds himself battling his own demons when faced with investigating his missing partner. A dark conspiracy will fuel a struggle for survival and the truth.
A Special Forces squad is sent in to deal with a paramilitary group who has taken over an aerospace compound. When a strange signal interrupts communications, all hell breaks loose in F.E.A.R..
Most of the soldiers are dead and you are left playing a cat and mouse game as you try to eliminate intruders while determining the origin of the signal.
In the end, you get a lot more than you bargained for.
10. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
In F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, Sgt. Michael Becket and his squad must stop a supernatural force, Alma Wade, after an explosion decimates the city.
Traverse the apocalyptic cityscape to find clues to destroying her before she destroys you with her terrifying power.
9. Siren: Blood Curse
Travel to the cursed village of Hanuda as part of an American TV crew. The so-called “Vanished Village” is stuck in the 1970s, surrounded by a foreboding red sea.
Do your best to survive the cursed horrors while trying to save the remaining villagers in Siren Blood Curse.
8. Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly
Play as a young girl with the sixth sense and her twin, who can see a crimson butterfly in the sky.
Investigate an abandoned village encountering spirits along the way, some good, but some evil as well. Your goal is to find your sister and keep her safe among the dark forces.
7. Resident Evil 4 HD
Six years after the destruction of Raccoon City, the president’s daughter is being held by a deranged organization. U.S. Agent Leon Kennedy is called in to find her in Europe.
However, these foes seem to have a dark connection with the nightmares and horrid mutations from the past. If you’re a fan of the Resident Evil series, you can get Resident Evil 4 HD in the Resident Evil 6 Anthology.

5. Resident Evil Director’s Cut
Resident Evil Director’s Cut is a remastered version of the first game in the series. Though the graphics are seriously outdated, this game inspired the horror genre.
The story is one of suspense and terror as you try to survive against hordes of hungry zombies and mutant monsters. If you didn’t get a chance to experience this on the original PlayStation, now’s your chance.
4. Dead Space 2
Reprise your role of Isaac Clarke, who is suffering from dementia after waking from a coma in Dead Space 2.
You’ll find that the nightmare you faced before has come back with a vengeance, ravaging the space-city you awoke on. Hunted and haunted, Isaac must do what he can to survive.
3. Silent Hill HD Collection
Revisit Silent Hill 2 and 3 in this HD Collection for PS3.
Both games focus on two very different stories that have one thing in common: connections to the eerie almost empty town. Both characters are drawn there, but only find the horrors that are hiding in the raining ash.
2. The Walking Dead: The Game
Play as the zombie apocalypse survivor Lee Everett in a world full of the walking dead. Lee, a one-time university professor and now convicted murderer, is not just responsible for keeping himself alive. He’s taken on the role of protector to the adorable and likeable Clementine as well.
Second chances don’t come often, but you might question whether survival is a curse. Make decisions that impact everyone around you across five episodes of dramatic gameplay.
There’s a reason why this won Game of the Year awards. If you haven’t had a chance to play The Walking Dead, you should pen a date in your calendar to make an appointment with this game.
1. The Last of Us
The inevitable apocalypse has come. And in this action-adventure survival horror game, everything is a threat. As Joel, you’re tasked with escort the young Ellie across the post-apocalyptic USA.
Try your hardest to survive cannibals, bandits, and worst of all, the infected. The ensuing hopelessness that overcomes the survivors is ever present as monsters born of the plague and fellow humans are now the enemies as you struggle to cross the country to protect Ellie.
The Last of Us is one of the PlayStation 3’s highest rated and awarded games. This is a game that should not be missed if you enjoy horror games.
PS3 is the best place to play horror games
All of these games aim to terrorize and scare as well as make you think how you’d react in certain situations. Some really hit the mark, while others barely miss it.
Each of the titles mentioned on the top 20 PS3 horror games list deserves to be on it due to the intense storylines, sense of terror and graphics that define what nightmares are made of.
The PlayStation 3 has brought gamers hundreds of hours of great horror gaming. And it would be a shame if you have missed out on these titles.
